Waterfront structures that are normally
floating (see Figure D.6), cantilevered, or
post-supported, usually built of wood, and
used for recreational purposes.
The construction of docks normally
requires municipal approval as well as
approval from the appropriate provincial
ministries/departments, and Parks Canada in
the case of federal canal systems.
Approvals are normally granted with
various conditions such as: all in-water
work to be completed between Labour Day and
March of the following year; turbidity to be
kept to a minimum; dredged materials to be
stabilized to prevent erosion; wood
treatment chemicals (such as creosote
preservative) not be used; and all
associated permits as required from regional
and municipal authorities. Generally, if
docks are permitted, such structures must
take into account sensitive habitat areas
and allow for the free movement of water and
fish.
Minimum disturbance to bottom cover is
normally achieved by using posts rather than
cribs. Environmentally friendly alternatives
such as floating and cantilever docks,
marine railways, and boat slips are often
preferred as they minimize shoreline
alteration. Care should be taken in
selecting the type of dock or wharfing
system given wave action, strength and
direction of current, prevailing winds, and
winter ice conditions.
